About us
It All Started with a Dream
Based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Applied Open Source was founded by friends and avid IT professionals, Carlos Fernandez and Don Whipple. The idea came about over a lunchtime conversation discussing their frustration with lackluster IT consulting companies. Carlos expressed the desire to work with well-versed specialists with an aptitude for client relations; while Don wished he could find seasoned technologists with reliable solutions that don’t cost a fortune to acquire and maintain.
The more they discussed their experiences and wish lists, the more they realized that everything they wanted in an IT consulting company was right there before them: Carlos could provide the technology expertise and Don could bring the client relations prowess. By the end of that fortuitous meal, they had decided to combine forces to start their own IT consulting firm. And with that,Applied Open Source was transformed from a business dream into reality.

When it comes to pricing, our two-part approach ensures transparency and affordability. Prior to beginning the project, we work with you to develop a Statement of Work detailing everything we plan to do, the timeline for completion, and the total cost of the project. We don’t believe in hidden fees. As long as your project requirements remain the same, your total cost will never change.
Accountable
Open, honest communication is key. Thus we use project management software to provide you with weekly status updates during the development and implementation process. At the end of the project, we will give you full rights to all of the source code, specifications, workflows, and any additional documentation we develop for you. We have nothing to hide, which is why we promise to keep you engaged every step of the way.

Meet our Founders
My passion is computer science! As a seasoned technologist with more than 20 years of experience, I have been responsible for the design and implementation of cross platform solutions for large, midsize, and start up companies.
Prior to relocating to Florida in 2004, I owned and managed my own information-consulting firm in the New York Metropolitan Area. Once I moved to Florida, I worked as a Software Architect, where I developed a rules engine and mortgage compliance system that directly contributed to revenue growth from $5 million to $128 million in two years.
I have certifications and training in CFR-Part 11 Validation, Oracle Databases, Microsoft Database, Sales Force Administration and various programming languages and mythologies including Microsoft and Open Source. Additionally I am a certified SCRUM master, which comes in handy as the proud father of four children!
I am an enthusiastic sales and operations professional with 20 years in building new customer relationships, account management and operational excellence.
My background includes varied leadership roles such as Enterprise Account Manager, Business Development Manager, and Senior Account Executive for technology companies and internet startups. In these positions, some of my clients have included AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, Intel, Real Networks, International Data Group, and Travleport, to name a few.
Over the years, I remain humbled by each client success story and grateful for those on the horizon. As the cofounder and managing partner of Applied Open Source, my commitment is to be impeccable with my word and always do my best. As a native of New Jersey, I pride myself on my WYSIWYG personality and endless curiosity. In other words, be prepared for a lot of questions!
My hobbies include exploring great places to eat, watching movies, and spending quality time with family and friends, especially with my partner, Michael, and our little girl, Lita — the most spoiled dog in South Florida.
